Children usually make friends at school in quite a natural way, through repeated contact. They sit next to each other in class, work together on group tasks, share snacks, or play the same games during breaks. At that age, friendship often starts from something very simple, like liking the same cartoon, supporting the same football team, or being kind to someone who feels left out. Outside school, children can also make friends through neighbours, sports clubs, music classes, playgrounds, or online games, although parents usually have more control over those friendships. I think it is better for children to have a few close friends, as long as they also learn how to get along with a wider circle of classmates. Close friendships give children emotional security and teach them trust, loyalty, and how to solve conflicts. However, having some casual friends is useful too, because it helps them become more sociable and adaptable. So, ideally, they should have both, but quality matters more than quantity. I don’t think friendships can be fully replaced by relationships with parents or relatives. Family members can give love, guidance, and protection, but friends give children a sense of equality. With friends, children practise sharing, negotiating, joking around, and sometimes dealing with rejection. In adult life, friendships made inside the workplace are often based on shared goals and daily pressure, while friends made outside work may be more relaxed and personal. Bosses and employees can become friends, but it takes clear boundaries, because power differences can easily make the relationship complicated.
