One unusual meal I had was about two years ago, when I was travelling in the north of Vietnam with two close friends. We had been riding motorbikes all day, and in the evening we stopped at a small family-run restaurant in a mountain village. It looked very simple from the outside, but the owner told us they could prepare a traditional local meal if we were willing to try something new. The most unusual dish was grilled river fish served with wild herbs, fermented bamboo shoots, and a dipping sauce that had a very strong smell. At first, I was a bit hesitant because the flavours were completely different from what I normally eat. But after a few bites, I started to enjoy it. The fish was smoky and fresh, while the herbs made the whole meal taste surprisingly refreshing. What made the meal memorable was not just the food, but the atmosphere. We sat on low wooden stools, the owner’s family joined us, and everyone was laughing and trying to explain the ingredients to us. Even though we didn’t speak the same language perfectly, the meal felt warm and welcoming. It was unusual, but in a really positive way, and it made me realise that food can be a great way to experience a different culture.
