One time I received money as a gift was on my 18th birthday. My grandparents gave me an envelope with some cash inside, which is quite a common tradition in my country. At first, I felt a little embarrassed because I wasn’t expecting such a generous amount, but they told me they wanted me to use it for something meaningful rather than just buying snacks or clothes. I decided to save most of it and spend a small part on a good-quality backpack for university. It might sound like a simple purchase, but at that time it felt quite special because it was something practical that I used almost every day. The rest of the money went into my savings account, and I later used it to pay for an English course. What made the gift memorable was not only the money itself, but the message behind it. My grandparents said it was their way of encouraging me to become more independent and responsible with my finances. Looking back, I think that gift taught me a lot about budgeting and appreciating money, instead of spending it impulsively.
