A place with a lot of trees that I’d really like to visit is Yakushima, a small island in southern Japan. It’s famous for its ancient cedar forests, and some of the trees there are believed to be thousands of years old. I first heard about it through a travel documentary, and later I found out that it partly inspired the forest scenery in the animated film Princess Mononoke, which made me even more curious about it. From what I’ve seen, Yakushima looks incredibly green, misty and almost magical. The forest is full of moss-covered rocks, winding trails, huge tree trunks and streams running through the mountains. It doesn’t seem like a typical tourist attraction with crowds and shops everywhere; it feels more untouched and peaceful, like somewhere you can slow down and really breathe. I’d like to visit it because I spend a lot of time in busy urban areas, so being surrounded by old trees and fresh air would be a complete change of pace. I think walking through such an ancient forest would be both relaxing and humbling, because it would remind me how small we are compared with nature. If I ever go there, I’d love to take a long hike, take photos, and just enjoy the silence without constantly checking my phone.
