One time when I had to tell a friend an important truth was about two years ago, when my close friend Minh was preparing for a job interview at a marketing company. He had asked me to listen to his practice answers, and honestly, they sounded very memorised. He was using impressive words, but his ideas were vague, and he didn’t really answer the questions directly. The truth I told him was that if he spoke like that in the real interview, he might come across as unnatural and even a bit overconfident. I didn’t say it harshly, but I told him that he needed to sound more genuine and give specific examples from his own experience. At first, he looked a little embarrassed, and I could tell he wasn’t expecting such direct feedback. However, after a few minutes, he admitted that he had focused too much on sounding professional rather than being clear. I think it was important to tell him the truth because a polite lie would not have helped him at all. Since he trusted me, I felt I had a responsibility to be honest, especially when something important was at stake. In the end, he changed the way he prepared, became much more natural in his answers, and actually got the job. That experience reminded me that real friendship sometimes means saying something uncomfortable for the other person’s benefit.
