One traditional story that I find really interesting is the legend of Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh, which is a well-known Vietnamese folk tale. It is about two powerful figures who both wanted to marry Princess Mi Nuong. Son Tinh, the Mountain God, could create mountains and forests, while Thuy Tinh, the Water God, could control storms and floods. In the end, Son Tinh won the princess’s hand, but Thuy Tinh became furious and kept attacking him with heavy rain and rising water every year. I first heard this story when I was quite young, probably in primary school, but the version I remember most clearly was told by my grandmother. She used to tell me folk tales in the evening, and this one stood out because it explained the annual floods in Vietnam in a very imaginative way. Instead of just saying floods happen because of the weather, the story turns nature into a dramatic battle between two supernatural characters. When I first heard it, I felt both excited and a little scared. The images of huge waves, dark clouds, and mountains rising higher and higher were very vivid in my mind. Looking back, I think the story is fascinating because it reflects how Vietnamese people used traditional storytelling to explain natural disasters and teach children about resilience. It is not just entertaining; it also carries a sense of cultural identity.
