The first time I properly talked in a foreign language was when I was in a small coffee shop near my university. I was with two classmates, and we had just met an exchange student from Germany who didn’t speak my native language very well. Since English was the only language we all had in common, I had no choice but to use it. At first, the conversation was very simple. We talked about our majors, our hometowns, and what food she should try while staying in the city. I remember trying to explain a local dish to her, but I couldn’t find the exact words, so I used gestures and easier vocabulary. Luckily, she was very patient and even helped me correct a few sentences naturally. I felt extremely nervous at the beginning because I was afraid of making grammar mistakes or having a strange accent. But after a few minutes, I realized that communication mattered more than perfection. By the end of the conversation, I felt proud and a bit more confident. It was a small moment, but it really changed the way I saw language learning.
