A time when I really needed to use my imagination was about two years ago, when I had to give a short presentation for an English class. The topic was quite unusual: we had to design a future city and explain how people would live there. At first, I thought it would be simple, but when I actually sat down to prepare, I realized I couldn’t just describe normal buildings and roads. I had to picture something original and convincing. I used my imagination because there was no fixed answer. I had to invent details, such as how people would travel, where they would work, and how the city would deal with pollution. I imagined a city with gardens on top of every building, driverless buses, and houses that could adjust their temperature automatically. It was not extremely difficult, but it did take me some time to make the ideas sound realistic rather than childish. In the end, I felt quite proud of myself. Before that, I usually preferred tasks with clear rules, so this activity pushed me out of my comfort zone. When my classmates reacted positively, I felt more confident and realised that imagination is not only for artists or writers. It can also help us solve problems and express ideas in a more interesting way.
