One friend who comes to mind is Minh, a close friend from university. He taught himself basic video editing during the pandemic, when most of our classes were online and he had a lot of spare time at home. At first, he just wanted to make short travel clips from old footage on his phone, but later he became quite serious about it and started learning how to use Premiere Pro and CapCut properly. He learned mainly through YouTube tutorials, online forums, and trial and error. I remember he would spend hours watching one technique, like colour grading or adding smooth transitions, and then immediately try to copy it with his own clips. The reason he learned it was partly for fun, but also because he wanted to earn some extra money by editing videos for small businesses and student clubs. After a few months, his work looked surprisingly professional, and he even got paid for several projects. As for whether it would be easier to learn from a teacher, I’d say yes and no. A good teacher could have helped him avoid common mistakes and given him structured feedback, which would probably have saved him a lot of time. But learning by himself also made him more independent and resourceful. In a creative skill like video editing, I think self-study can work very well as long as the person is motivated, patient, and willing to keep improving.
