One time when I gave advice to someone was about two years ago, when my younger cousin was choosing a university major. She had just finished high school and felt torn between studying business, which her parents preferred, and graphic design, which she genuinely enjoyed. She asked me for my opinion because I had gone through a similar decision a few years earlier. I advised her not to choose a major only because it sounded practical or because other people approved of it. Instead, I suggested that she look at three things: her real interests, her strengths, and the kind of daily work she could imagine doing in the future. I also told her to speak to current students, compare course outlines, and maybe take a short online design course before making a final decision. I gave her that advice because she seemed anxious and was putting too much pressure on herself to satisfy everyone. I didn’t want to push her in one direction, but I wanted her to make an informed choice rather than a rushed one. In the end, she chose a design-related program with some business modules, which turned out to be a good compromise. I felt quite pleased because my advice helped her think more clearly and confidently.
