One occasion that immediately comes to mind was about two years ago, when I went to take an English proficiency test at a language centre in my city. The test room was on the third floor of a fairly quiet building, and before we entered, the invigilator asked everyone to switch off their mobile phones and put them in a sealed plastic bag under the desk. We were told very clearly that even touching a phone during the test could lead to disqualification. The reason was pretty obvious: they wanted to prevent cheating and also avoid any distractions. A ringing phone or a notification sound could easily break everyone’s concentration, especially during the listening section. At first, I felt a bit uncomfortable because I’m used to checking my phone whenever I feel nervous or bored. It was almost like a habit, and not having access to it made me feel slightly cut off. However, after the test started, I actually found it helpful. Since I couldn’t look at my phone, I focused completely on the questions and managed my time more carefully. By the end, I felt that the rule was strict but reasonable. It reminded me that sometimes being away from my phone, even for just a few hours, can help me concentrate much better.
